Before my move to Germany, I had never been alone, so I used to miss home all the time. In that longing, one day I thought why not watch “Swades”, Staring Shahrukh Khan. Swades is a a film about an NRI’s journey of rediscovery and social responsibility as he reconnects with his roots in rural India. I downloaded the movie using the torrent software on my computer, enjoyed Shahrukh Khan’s amazing performance, and fell asleep. Two weeks later, when I was checking my mailbox, I received a very dangerous letter which stated that I had been fined 500 euros. When I told my german friend about it, he congratulated me, saying that the fine was quite low. In Germany, copyright laws are so strong that downloading or uploading pirated stuff is a big crime, for which you can be fined from 900 to 1500 euros, and not paying on time can even land you in jail. The copyright-related laws here are so strict that you cannot even use someone else’s edited image without permission. It was such a shock to pay the fine that I forgot the sadness of missing home.
