HOW TO MAKE SUPER FAST Compost in 18 Days (HOT Composting)

ดูวิดีโอตอนนี้ HOW TO MAKE SUPER FAST Compost in 18 Days (HOT Composting)

Today we embarked upon making super fast compost in 18 days!
To make compost in 18 days is quite straight forward but there are a few things to know before you begin.

Firstly we are using what is known as a hot composting technique.
For this, you will need equal amounts of carbon, nitrogen & manure.

We are using leftover sticks from feeding our goats for the carbon. We run it through the shredder first to increase the surface area. This is to help the woody material break down quickly.

For the nitrogen element, we are using freshly cut weeds. Seeds from weeds will rot due to this being a hot compost method.

For the manure, we are using our goat droppings.

The shredded wood, weeds & manure are then continuously layered & watered until approximately 1m high.

A compost activator is then added. You can use some finished compost or urine to get the composting cycle going.

The compost pile is then partially covered for 4 days. After this, the pile is the turned, watered & recovered every 2 days.

This hot composting method takes just 18 days from start to finish if all the elements are in place & maintained correctly.

Basic composting tips:
Good compost should be damp & when squeezed together should only create one drop of water. Add water if the compost pile is too wet. Aerate the pile if it becomes too wet.

What are the benefits of Composting?
A good quality compost enriches the soil, helping retain moisture & suppress plant diseases & pests. Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria & fungi that break down organic matter to create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material.

25 things you can add to your compost pile:
1. Shredded newspaper
2. Paper towels and napkins
3. Wine and beer
4. Expired spices
5. Bedding from hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs
6. Cotton and wool fabrics
7. Jam, jellies and fruit preserves
8. Used matchsticks
9. Leftover brine or canning liquid
10. Jell-O (gelatin)
11. Expired yeast
12. Dry pet food
13. Bamboo skewers
14. Wooden chopsticks
15. Wood ash
16. Tea bags
17. Candy
18. Hair
19. Feathers
20. Nail clippings
21. Cotton balls
22. wooden toothpicks
23. Natural wine corks
24. Sawdust
25. Eggshells

10 Things you can’t add to your compost pile
1. Inorganic and Non-Biodegradable Materials
2. Coated or Glossy Printed Papers
3. Diseased and Infested Plants
4. Bakery Products
5. Feces and Manure of Carnivorous Animals
6. Cooking Oil
7. Meat Products
8. Dairy Products
9. Plants treated with Pesticides and Herbicides
10. Sawdust

Benefits of 18 Day Hot Composting (40-65°C)
1. The right hot composting system will work all year round – which is relevant when composting food waste.
2. Hot Composting can take a wider variety of food waste types without causing issues.
Also the higher temperature results in water removal – and hence removes a prime cause of mushy/anaerobic food waste).
3. Hot composting kills weed seeds faster. The higher the temperature the more seeds are destroyed.
4. Hot composting kills pathogens and unwelcome bacteria. Which and how many is a function of both time and temperature. Defra offers a robust analysis, but a neat summary is that 60C for 1 hour equals good sanitization,
There are two groups of pathogens those dangerous to farm animals (e.g. foot & mouth) and those dangerous to humans (nasty strains of e-coli or salmonella).
5. There is a lot of confusion and hype about various herbicides wrecking vegetable plots when treated plants have been added to compost heaps.
Herbicides and pesticides are broken down in composting. They are broken down 32 times faster at 60°c than at 10°c.
6. Speed is not important to everyone – gardeners, on the whole, are a patient group. However, if you are short of space speed means fewer bins. We often hear about cold bins that are overflowing, requiring a second, third or 4th unit. If you want more vegetable plot and garden and fewer compost plots – then hot composting quickly is a benefit.
7. A hot heap rarely produces putrid odors. Hot heaps transfer water away from the heap as steam (as long as the waste has free air space which is normally provided by bulking agent).
All composting produces other odors – known as volatile organic chemicals. These often have an odor. This is more noticeable in hot composting as they are made faster and the heat vaporizes them. Hot composting needs a bio-filter unless the bin is away from human noses. But access to your bin is important if you want to recycle more food waste.
8. A hot bin will kill fly eggs & larvae – so no swarms of flies or maggots in a hot compost bin. It’s too hot at the top for ants, rats, and most things you don’t like to see in a heap.
