ดูวิดีโอตอนนี้ SKIMMING THE RUNWAY! F-35 LIGHTNING INSANE AWESOME LOW APPROACH • RAF LAKENHEATH USAFE #SENDIT
Almost like a scene out of the movie Top Gun, except these pilots are NOT actors and are the real deal, these F35As of the 48th Fighter Wing, show us how it’s done. In fact I would say that the filmmakers of Top Gun would say “like something out of the USAF”. You will see a nice mix of low passes, some literally skimmed the runway.
These F-35A Lightning II comprising of the 493d Fighter Squadron (Grim Reapers) and the 495th Fighter Squadron (Valkyries) at RAF Lakenheath perform an approach called a ‘Low Approach” and some of them howled, some almost skimming the runway and there was also a “High Key Low Approach” too.
What is a Low Approach?
It is a when an aircraft will approach the runway at a low altitude (minimum altitude specified by ATC) and will pass low and go around. It is sometimes referred to as a low pass, and is essentially a go-around manoeuvre following an approach. Instead of touching down, a pilot may wish to go-around without touching down in order to expedite a particular operation.
Why do fighter jets carry out a Low Approach?
Well, practice can make perfect but can also burn fuel too. But, this manoeuvre can be useful in combat or if there is an issue with the runway. In combat, many aircraft will operate at altitudes as low as 100 ft and at high airspeeds to defeat ground missile radars and avoid sophisticated surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery, and enemy fighters. On a more day to day scenario, there could be a last minute emergency on the runway. It could also be used a reconnaissance too.
The F-35A is the U.S. Air Force’s latest fifth-generation fighter. It will replace the U.S. Air Force’s aging fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II’s, which have been the primary fighter aircraft for more than 20 years, and bring with it an enhanced capability to survive in the advanced threat environment in which it was designed to operate. With its aerodynamic performance and advanced integrated avionics, the F-35A will provide next-generation stealth, enhanced situational awareness, and reduced vulnerability for the United States and allied nations.
The conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A gives the U.S. Air Force and its allies the power to dominate the skies – anytime, anywhere. The F-35A is an agile, versatile, high-performance, 9g capable multirole fighter that combines stealth, sensor fusion and unprecedented situational awareness.
